Abstract

The Meta department has an invaluable natural and cultural wealth that makes it very attractive for the arrival of tourists, a number that has been increasing in recent years. However, unemployment levels in the Meta department have had a slight upward trend. Therefore, determining the incidence of the tourism sector in the proxy variable unemployment rate in the department of Meta is essential to help boost the economy through an economic sector that, unlike extractive economies, helps preserve and conserve natural resources. This was done through multiple regression econometric modeling, where the variable unemployment rate was used as a dependent variable, based on the Gross Domestic Product of the sectors: trade; repair and maintenance; hotels and restaurants, all at 2005 prices. It was found that, of the variables proposed in this model, the only variable that explains the behavior of unemployment, in the time series from 1990 to 2016 in the department of Meta is hotel and restaurant. As a general conclusion, by increasing the production of the hotel and restaurant sector by one billion pesos, the unemployment rate is reduced by 0.26%.
