Unemployment: sociodemographic analysis as a determinant of participation in the colombian labor market
The objective of the research is to determine the probability of being unemployed in Cúcuta and its metropolitan area in 2019, for which the following sociodemographic variables are taken into account: age, gender, head of household, duration of unemployment, education and trade. A non-experimental quantitative study with a descriptive scope framed in the empirical-analytical paradigm is carried out; the sample corresponds to 18,714 individuals, which was obtained from the Great Integrated Household Survey (GEIH). From a Probit-type econometric model, the following results were obtained: (1) Being male in 2019 increased the probability of being unemployed by 2.6pp ; (2) it was found that young people are the most likely to be unemployed; (3) being the head of the household decreases the probability of being unemployed (1.0pp); (4) education reduces the probability of being unemployed differentially, having a postgraduate degree reduces this probability by 3.2pp, tertiary education 2.1pp, higher education 1.6pp and being a bachelor 0.9pp; (5) In turn, it is evident that people who sought to be employed as workers in the private sector had a lower probability of doing so compared to those who sought to perform this work in the public sector. Therefore, it was concluded that, in Cúcuta and its metropolitan area, being young, male, with a bachelor's degree and seeking employment as a worker in the private sector, increases the probability of being unemployed. On the other hand, being between 45 and 62 years of age, being female, with a postgraduate degree, increases the probability of finding a job.
