Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the incidence of canine dirofilariasis by direct smear in the Pimocha parish of Babahoyo canton, a disease caused in dogs by the nematode Dirofilaria inmitis identified by the direct smear method in sampled animals. The sample size was 320 animals, distributed in the following sectors: Alegria, Centro, Crespin Cerezo, Fortuna, La Carmela, La Legua, Margarita, La Tranca, Las Malvinas, Las Palmas, Naranjillo, Naranjo, Naranjo 1, Naranjo 2, Nueva Esperanza, Porvenir, Puerto Zinc. The incidence of the disease was evaluated according to race, age, sex and location. The positive cases were evaluated by the Non Parametric and Chi Square test, with the data obtained and the statistical analysis applied, the following results were obtained: Of the 320 dogs sampled, 7 were positive, which represented 2.19% of incidence, with a sensitivity of the diagnostic test of 2.19%. Regarding the breed, by the diagnostic method used, 7 mongrels were positive 2.39 %; according to sex, females were the most infested, since there were 5 cases, with 1.56 %, while there were only 2 positive cases in males with 0.63 %. The statistical evaluation using the non-parametric Chi-square test determined that there was no statistical significance for sex (p<0.05). The evaluation for the age between 0 and 1 year was 4 positive cases which represented 1.25 %; for the age of more than 1 and 4 years the positive cases were 2, which represented 0.63 %; for the age of more than 4 years of age was 1 positive case which represented 0.31 %, the statistical evaluation by means of the non-parametric test of Chi Square determined that there is no statistical significance for age, (p<0.05). Crespin Cerezo is a locality with hygienic and environmental problems that allows the discovery of potential risks that highlight the high intensity of parasitic invasion in the company's animals.
