The present research consists of a bibliographic review about the Unit Operation: Liquid-liquid extraction, which is based on the separation of a solute of interest found in a solution with the help of a solvent that is immiscible to that solution and that has more dissolution affinity with the solute. This work proposes to compile basic, relevant and updated general information about the liquid-liquid extraction process such as basic concepts, techniques, most common extraction solvents and their characteristics, and equipment used; in addition to the importance of its application in the industry. The process of liquid-liquid extraction for the treatment of water resources will be exemplified in the extraction of contaminants from two different sources: drugs (specifically naproxen and phenol) associated to the health area and hydrocarbons from the oil industry, using different solvents that show their effectiveness in the extraction of the contaminants of interest, which leads to the recovery of the quality of the water being treated and thus highlighting the importance of the application of liquid-liquid extraction for the purification of the vital liquid.
