Analysis of the use of information and communication technologies in rural extension in the strawberry production system in the municipality of Pamplona, Colombia
The objective of this research was to analyze the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the rural extension process in the strawberry production system in the municipality of Pamplona (Colombia). For this, a sample of 85 producers and 18 extension workers from the municipality was defined. The characterization of both groups was carried out in relation to the use of ICT through sociodemographic variables, identification, experience and limitations in the use of these technologies during the various rural extension activities. The data were analyzed with descriptive and differential statistics. Additionally, significance tests, such as Chi-square test, Cramer's V, and Pearson classification, were used to examine the relationships between sociodemographic variables and participants' perspectives on the use of ICT in agricultural decision-making. The characterization allowed us to identify that at the level of producers, 83.3% are men and for extension workers, 16.7% with a predominant age range of 41 to 60 years for producers and 26 to 40 years for extension workers. The level of education indicated that 60% of the producers have primary education while for the extension agents 78% are professionals. The main service offered by extension agents is technical assistance followed by the sale of products and inputs. Skills in the use of ICT for rural extension were classified as moderate, being affected with increasing age of the extension agent. Producers see ICT as an important tool for decision-making for their production system. The aspect considered most limiting in the use of ICT by producers is due to the lack of knowledge (r = -0.497). The time of Internet use and the type of information consulted does not present a relationship for extension workers. Age presents a low to moderate relationship in terms of the perception of the use of ICT for extension workers. For producers, age, gender and education have no influence on the use of ICT for decision making.
