Irregular antibodies in transfused patients and associated morbidity
The presence of irregular antibodies that differ from the natural antibodies of the immune system can cause severe hemolytic reactions that complicate future blood transfusions and endanger the patient's life. The objective of the study is to describe the irregular antibodies in transfused patients and associated morbidity, where the methodology applied is descriptive documentary narrative. The results show that, in North America, 48.8% of cases of alloimmunization occur. In Central America, a study in Mexico reported 43.3% of Anti-E, 35.8% of Anti-D and 20.9% of Anti-C. In South America, a study in Colombia revealed 50% Anti-E, 25% Anti-Kell and 25% Anti-C, while in Ecuador the most frequent irregular antibodies are 50% Anti-E and 25% Anti-Kell; blood transfusions for diseases such as anemia, leukemia, trauma, internal bleeding, obstetrics, spontaneous abortion present antibodies such as Anti-D and Anti-E. It is concluded that this study provides significant evidence that supports the need to improve strategies for the prevention and management of alloimmunization, which could contribute to optimizing the quality of life of transfused patients.
