Relational analysis as a methodological proposal for studying communication

The evolution of the study of communication involves the identification of new social problems and the corresponding adaptation of methodological designs that allow for addressing these issues. In this sense, the objective of this research focuses on identifying reticular or relational analysis as a feasible methodological perspective for application in communication research. This proposal emerged closely linked to the origin of communication studies; both had parallel but distant developments, and their convergence can provide fertile ground for this discipline of study. The methodological development consisted of a documentary exploration in 6 databases and historical archives and allowed the collection of concepts such as Social Network, as well as its multidisciplinary origin, this review resulted in the understanding of social networks as a study perspective at the meso level, from the reticular approach or based on the structure of a network as well as the types of relationships and the flow of the different resources contained in them, the evolution of this relational perspective as a methodological proposal through the analysis of the conformation of personal or complete social networks, the general characteristics of its structure, the links or ties, the resources that flow in its ties and its main disciplinary applications; Finally, the conditions for applying this methodological perspective to communication research are outlined using the example of research on communication flows in the social relationships that make up the personal networks of victims of disasters associated with natural phenomena.
